Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a therapy that is based on the science of how we learn and behave. Over the years behaviour analysts have been able to utilise and apply the successes from the learning of this science to teach individuals new skills. This includes teaching skills in some of the following areas: language and communication, academics, social skills, play skills, daily living skills like shopping, self-care such as brushing and toileting, fine motor and organisational skills. As the science of behaviour develops over time we can take the teachings of this evidence and apply it to our teachings in the home settings, at school and in clinics. ABA uses a set of principles that can be personalised to the individual and we can teach new skills. These scientifically proven methods have evolved over the years and we can apply the successes in our behaviour therapy to teach children with autism and other related disorders learn language and communication as well as academics and self-help skills.
We adopt a series of evidence-based teaching techniques that focus on the principles of
ABA. This includes the foundations of Verbal Behaviour that utilise the teachings of the work
of the psychologist and behaviourist B.F Skinner. We only endorse teaching methods that
are clinically proven methods to be successful. These strategies include reinforcement and
motivational strategies.
Reinforcement is one of the most important and valuable strategies used for teaching.
Reinforcement is when the behaviour occurs when the response is followed by
an immediate consequence that will result in strengthening that behaviour which means it
is likely to occur more frequently in the future. Some of the practices we use to help our
clients also include errorless teaching, prompt fading, shaping and other scientifically
proven strategies to help teach and support the child’s learning experience into achievable
steps.
The behaviour consultant will work with the client and agree on a treatment plan.
